Properties:
Ethane is a colourless and odourless, combustible, non-toxic gas and it is one of the alkanes and as such is unreactive.
Around 5-10% of ethane is present in natural gas and is formed in petroleum refining in a naphtha cracker and in coal liquefaction.
The tubular cracker process converts the majority of ethane into ethene. Catalytic oxidation can prepare Ethanal and acetic acid from ethane. Small amounts are converted by gas phase nitration with nitric acid to yield nitroethane and nitromethane.
Ethane is also used as a refrigerant in the low temperature range.
