Properties
Ethyl Chloride is a colourless, combustible, anaesthetic gas with an ether-like smell and is poorly soluble in water.
It is obtained industrially by adding hydrogen chloride to ethene, whilst another process uses ethane and chlorine as raw materials with the free-radical reaction either thermally or photochemically. Sometimes referred to as Chloroethane, it is used to manufacture tetraethyl lead although production tonnages are declining greatly due to the increase in sales of leaded petrol.
Does ethyl chloride have industrial applications?
Ethyl chloride is used in industrial processes as a solvent and also as an ethylating agent. Liquefied chloroethane is also used as a local anaesthetic, although it is no longer used as an anaesthetic gas.
