Properties:

Ammonia is a colourless toxic gas with a pungent smell.

Lighter than air and readily soluble in water, alcohols, acetone and chloroform.

Ammonia burns with difficulty and generally can’t continue to burn after the source of ignition is removed. When ammonia water is heated, ammonia can escape completely, which is the reason for it being called ‘volatile alkali’. It severely attacks copper in all forms, meaning it should be avoided for construction materials such as valves and pipes.

Ammonia is formed in nature by putrefaction processes of nitrogenous organic compounds, especially in proteins, which is the process responsible for the emissions of ammonia from liquid manure.

It is obtained industrially by the Haber-Bosch process which involves reacting hydrogen and nitrogen at high temperature and high pressure with the use of an iron catalyst.

Ammonia is also used in making blueprints and in the metallurgical industry for nitride hardening and as a protective gas plus as a refrigerant in large refrigeration plants.
