Properties:
Yellow-green toxic, noncombustible, dense gas. A very reactive element that does not occur in nature in the free state.
In the presence of water, Chlorine is severely corrosive to most metals. Alternatively, dry chlorine does not corrode iron and copper.

In the laboratory, chlorine is liberated from hydrochloric acid using an oxidising agent such as manganese dioxide, permanganate, chlorate or chromate.

Industrial chlorine is obtained using the chlor-alkali electrolysis process that involves decomposing an aqueous solution of common salt by an electric current.

Chlorine is slightly soluble in water with this solution called chlorine water, which is used as an oxidising agent and must be protected from sunlight during storage. This prevents the hypochlorous acid that is present from decomposing to hydrochloric acid and oxygen.

The Uses of Chlorine

Chlorine is one of the basic materials of the chemical industry, with its most important uses including the manufacture of chloroethene for PVC synthesis and of other chlorinated organic compounds, refrigerants and bleaching agents. The oxidising action of chlorine disinfects drinking water and swimming pools plus it can be used for bleaching in the textile, cellulose and paper industries.

Other uses include de-tinning tinplate, to digest ores plus the production of a number of inorganic compounds, hydrogen chloride, phosphorus, sulphur chlorides and metal chlorides.
