Colourless, combustible gas with an anaesthetic action, smelling of ether. Soluble in many polar and non polar solvents.

The solubility in water is 37 I in 1 of water at 291 K. The mixture with air is explosive in the range from about 3-18% vol./vol. Of DME and is held to be the main factor responsible for an explosion in Ludwigshafen 1948.

Large amounts of dimethyl ether are formed as a byproduct in methanol synthesis from synthesis gas.

The applications of Dimethyl ether

Dimethyl ether is very suitable as an aerosol propellant gas because it is soluble in water and is miscible with organic solvents. It can also act as a solvent itself at the same time plus it is also used in the chemical industry to manufacture chloromethane dimethyl sulphate and acetic acid, and for methylations.
