Colourless and odourless, combustible gas, non toxic gas.

Linear chain shaped isomer, readily soluble in organic solvents but practically insoluble in water.

Butane occurs naturally in what is known as wet natural gas obtained from petroleum deposits.

Before 1945, the butanes were dehydrogenated to give butenes and then converted into alkylate motor fuel.

Where is Butane used?

Butane is used in laboratories, domestically and in the industry as a fuel gas, including cigarette lighters, gas engines and camping gas cookers.

The majority of this gas is used as a raw material for the industrial manufacture of butadiene and also to manufacture maleic anhydride.

Recently, butane has been used increasingly as a propellant gas and as a refrigerant. It is also used as an alternative to CFCs that damage the ozone layer.
