18.5Kg

Connections:

DIN 477 No1 (W21.80 x 1/14LH)

Properties:

Colourless, combustible, non toxic gas with a slight sweetish odour. Readily soluble in organic solvents and slightly soluble in water.

Ethylene is the simplest alkene and undergoes the typical addition and polymerisation reactions at the double bond. It is synthesised naturally, mainly in ripened fruit, where it acts as a plant hormone and also accelerates ripening. The ripening process can be delayed by continuously removing the ethylene.

How is Ethylene manufactured?

Ethylene is obtained almost exclusively from natural gas and petroleum by using cracking processes. The raw materials for this are ethane and propane (sourced from natural gas) or naphtha (crude gasoline from petroleum).

Fractional low temperature distillation removes byproducts. Older production processes for ethylene are based on the partial hydrogenation of ethine or on the dehydration of ethanol with sulphuric acid or aluminium oxide.

What are the applications of Ethylene?

Around half of the ethene production is used to produce polyethylene with the remainder divided among numerous other industrial processes.

The most important applications include chlorination to 1,2-dichloroethane for the manufacture of chloroethene or PVC oxidation to oxirane or ethanal; manufacturing ethylbenzene for the production of polystyrene, hydration to ethanol and gasifying warehouses or refrigerated stores to control fruit ripening processes.
