Hydrogen Chloride

Hydrogen chloride and hydrochloric acid react with basic substances such as alkalis, ammonia and amines with a large exotherm to form salts. Hydrochloric acid corrodes base metals, including iron, zinc and magnesium forming hydrogen and the corresponding metal chloride.

When concentrated sulphuric acid acts on sodium chloride, hydrogen chloride is formed with other methods including burning chlorine detonating gas or the decomposition of phosphorus trichloride with water. 

 

The majority of the hydrogen chloride produced industrially is formed as a byproduct in the chlorination of organic compounds and in the pyrolysis of 1,2-dichloroethane which forms vinyl chloride. 

 

What are its applications?

 

Dry hydrogen chloride is used in a number of organic syntheses, sometimes as a reactant and in some cases as a catalyst. Hydrochloric acid is used for metal pickling, to regenerate ion exchangers, to form the hydrochlorides of basic compounds, for lime scale removal, to digest ores plus in chemical analysis.
