Properties:

Colourless, very toxic, corrosive, non combustible gas smelling of mouldy hay.

Readily soluble in chloroform, benzene and acetic acid.

Phosgene is formed when chlorine-containing plastics are burnt and in the pyrolysis of chlorinated hydrocarbons in the presence of metals or carbon. The gas needs to be dry when packed into containers, for example, the dewpoint of the packed gas must be below -10c .

Phosgene is manufactured industrially from carbon monoxide and chlorine over an active carbon catalyst.

It is an important raw material for numerous organic syntheses with uses such as dyes, pharmaceuticals, pesticides and synthetic resins.

Safety Information

Phosgene is very toxic and causes irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. It can also cause nausea and vomiting.

For detailed Safety and Handling information refer to the downloadable MSDS.
