Properties:
Colourless and odourless non toxic, combustible gas with a weak anaesthetic action at high concentrations.
Propane is a constituent of natural gas and of petroleum cracking gases, from which its obtained. It is also an alkane, making it correspondingly unreactive.

Propane is used as a fuel gas or heating gas with a calorific value of 101.2 MJ/m3. More recently it has been used as a refrigerant and aerosol propellant gas, because compared to the chlorofluorocarbons it doesn’t damage the ozone layer.

Propane is also an important solvent in separating the high-boiling fractions of petroleum and coal oils. Most of the propane that is extracted is converted in medium and high temperature pyrolysis plants to yield ethene and, to a lesser extent, acetylene.
