Colourless, combustible liquid with an ether like odour. Irritate the skin eyes and respiritary organs.Properties:

Because of the energy-rich three-membered ring contained in the molecule, epoxypropane tends to polymerise and need to be stored in refrigeration and under a slight positive pressure of nitrogen. Propylene Oxide is miscible with many organic solvents and is readily soluble in water, although at elevated temperatures the three membered ring is opened to form Propylene Oxide. The reaction is catalysed by acids and bases.

The most crucial method of the manufacturing is the chlorohydrin process, whose raw materials are chlorine, propene and water. Chloropropanol formed as an intermediate is dehydrochlorinated with a base whilst other processes use peroxides such as tert-butyl hydroperoxide or percarboxylic acids that oxidise propene.

Propylene Oxide is mainly reacted to form polypropylene glycols, which are processed into polyurethanes, nonionic surfactants, plasticisers, antifreezes and synthetic resins. Other downstream products of Propylene Oxide include allyl alcohol, aminopropanol, propane diol and pharmaceuticals.
