Properties:
Colourless and odourless combustible gas with a weak anaesthetic action. Readily soluble in many organic solvents but insoluble in water.
Propylene is sourced from the cracking gases formed in petroleum refining. The C3 fraction from a naphtha cracker already consists of more than 90% of propane with the degree of further purification depending on the intended use.
It is an important raw material in the chemical industry and is used to manufacture isopropyl alcohol, cumen, butanol, 1,2-epoxypropane, acrylic acid and methionine. Roughly 40% of the propene is used for polymerisation, part of it by direct polymerisation to polypropylene with the remainder converted via acrylonitrile into polyacrylonitriles, polyamides and polyacrylamides.
